notified me in 1926, together with ten

existing vacancies of a similar kindin

the Education Department of Malaya.

Over 250 applications were then

received and considered. Out of all

these, only 2 or 3 candidates were

eventually found sufficiently suitable

for appointment.

6. Particulars of the vacancies

had also been widely circulated to the

various University Appointments Boards

etc. in accordance with the usual practice

referred to in paragraph 4 above, and

correspondence concerning them, and the

urgent need of candidates, has been

maintained up till the present time.

In fact I may say that no pains have

been spared in the endeavour to fill

these vacancies.

7. When Mr. Orme arrived in this

country, opportunities were taken of

di scussing the question of recruitment

with him, and arrangements were made for
